Railotech’s field team has just returned from the sunny Bothnian Bay where Riikka Matala, Jukka-Pekka Sallinen and Eetu Seppänen carried out ice measurements on the Kemi-Tornio fairway.
This work is part of the SNAIL (Study on NAvigation in Ice channeL) project funded by the Winter Navigation Research Board where we will measure the transverse profile of the brash ice channel at the same location three times with two-week intervals. In addition, we will collect performance data about merchant ships passing through the measurement area. The goal of this study is to validate full-scale performance predictions, improve the accuracy of calculation methods for brash ice growth, and gain information on how ice on a heavily trafficked shipping channel evolves as the winter navigating season progresses.
You can read more about Railotech’s recent and ongoing research and development projects in the latest issue of our Arctic Passion News. We look forward to tell you about the findings of the SNAIL project in the future.
