The polar logistics vessel concept was developed by Marine Assistance (France). The vessel was built by Chantier Piriou (Concarneau, France) and delivered in 2017.
Aker Arctic supported Piriou Shipyard during the construction of the polar logistics vessel L’Astrolabe by providing specialised expertise in ice‑capable ship design. Our role was to ensure that the vessel’s hull, propulsion solutions and operational capabilities would meet the demanding requirements of Antarctic operations while remaining efficient in open‑water patrol duties.
Throughout the build phase, Aker Arctic worked closely with Piriou’s engineering and production teams, helping to resolve technical questions and refine ice‑specific details essential for reliable performance. This cooperation included monthly on‑site visits to the shipyard, ensuring smooth progress, rapid decision‑making and consistent alignment with the vessel’s performance targets.
It was a very interesting experience for Piriou to share Aker Arctic’s experience and skills in designing and building ice and arctic vessels. Aker Arctic and Piriou teams have worked together in order to find the best technical solutions to achieve the vessel’s performances and to meet the tight schedule for her delivery. Despite differences in cultural and shipbuilding practices, the two parties have worked together with positive dialogue in order to succeed in this challenging project.

Antarctic science: the french polar logistics vessel L’Astrolabe
For two decades, Aker Arctic has helped nations and research institutes reach the farthest corners of the Earth – from Arctic ice to Antarctic seas…
L’Astrolabe on her first missions
She has successfully undertaken several supply trips from Hobart in Tasmania to the French research station, Dumont D’Urville, in Antarctica. Now she is returning to Reunion Island for patrolling duties in the Indian Ocean during the winter months.
